This article is not for arrogant snobs who want to show off: let them buy expensive bonsai and pave the yard with red pavers. And if you’re worried about how to create a luxurious impression in your garden, but without compromising style and aesthetics, read on.
WHO IS THAT LUXURY IN THE BACKYARD?
Residential neighborhoods are economic, middle and upper class (in your city you will quickly find out which neighborhood represents which class), private houses can also be built and equipped economically or luxuriously (this was explained very clearly at the seminar “Construction Studies”). If you thought the standard trio of “lawn, thuja hedge and pine trees” was fine, you’re wrong. The construction site is also a bearer of information and must adapt to the context.
If your home is classic in style and located in a good neighborhood, you should also consider a luxurious backyard. Even a courtyard in the historic center, full of centuries of city history, must not be cared for negligently. Moreover, if your farm is not just a market with pastures around it, but an old inherited estate, it also requires an appropriate approach.
This article is also relevant for those who want to sell land: it is obvious that a luxurious and aesthetic yard increases the value of the land.
MATURE TREES
With freshly planted gnomes you can’t beat the feeling of luxury. If your farm or yard is fresh and bare, invest in large trees first. Call the professionals, nowadays it is already possible to plant really large trees. They will immediately change the whole picture and bring a mature solidity to the environment.
If you already have mature trees and shrubs in your yard, don’t rush to remove them, even if they are particularly old. Check it out, maybe there are ways to cure the diseased ones, to prune the broken and thick ones.
If an old deciduous hedge (such as hawthorn) has overgrown and become a tangle of trees, cut it back leaving only a little above the ground. Shape the shoots that will grow next year while they are still small, and in a few years you will have a healthy, strong and beautifully green hedge again.
DECORATIVE GARDEN PLANTS – FOR ACCENTS
It is not necessary to plant the entire plot with rare, beautiful and especially expensive plants – the courtyard may not seem luxurious, but simply unreasonably crowded. In addition, lush plants will require additional care, it may be necessary to cover them for the winter, spray them to attack diseases, etc.
Grow reliable and undemanding plants for the background, for example, flexi, hydrangeas, thistles. And to impress, choose a plant or group of plants that will attract everyone’s attention. Take a look at the old manor parks and you will see some interesting examples.
The tulip tree, the ginkgo tree: the pride of the manor park. Oak – a luxurious shade on a suburban plot. The berry-covered rowan tree is the centerpiece of the Old Town courtyard. The magnolia blooming in spring is an admirable accent. Budlėja – the fragrant magic of butterflies (better in the western part of Lithuania, a milder microclimate is needed).
.
Look for the idea of an accent plant in Lithuanian manor parks and botanical gardens. Visit it during the season and you will find the pearl you like best.
ROSES AND A LUXURIOUS GARDEN
Roses were the pride of many large estates, they are an integral part of a luxurious plot and you can grow them too.
Not all of them are as succulent as we commonly think. For example, old roses grow as a rather large bush and often do not even require coverage for the winter. Plus, it smells amazing. No one denies that smell influences our subconscious, which is why it is an integral part of a luxurious backyard.
We also talked about it at the environmental design conference “Garden Style”, which took place in 2016 on 27 August in Trakai. Perfume can give your brain that hidden information, that feeling of luxury mixed with warmth and intimacy. Therefore, do not purchase scented rose varieties until you have smelled them. Therefore, do not mix many fragrant plants in one place. Choose the one you liked most and that reflects the mood you want. It will be one of the success factors that will make you realize that luxury is here as soon as you enter your garden.
AND WHERE TO GROW EDIBLE PLANTS?
There is no need to hide it, we are Lithuanian by birth and we like to grow our own vegetables. It doesn’t necessarily clash with the aesthetics of luxury! Sure, a potato field in an upscale neighborhood will seem more than a little strange, but certain edible plants were not only considered gourmet in the past, they are no longer.
Grape – one of these plants. At the conference”Garden style“ Dr. Asta Ramaškevičienė spoke about the most suitable grape varieties for cultivation in Lithuania.
He says the sweet and tasty grape is no longer exotic even in the eastern part of Lithuania. There are resistant varieties whose berries ripen at the end of August. Bring a bunch of berries with you when you visit, press juice and even make wine – everything was possible to taste at the conference.
The speaker’s family members (here is their shop) continue the winemaking traditions of the Lithuanian heritage, so they have a lot to tell from real practice about how to choose, grow and care for grapes in Lithuania.
In addition, the grape has an aesthetically pleasing appearance, its beautiful cut leaves, may have pink petioles, filled with beautiful bunches – a real luxury in your garden.
Another greedy plant, which has passed from the manor gardens to the villagers’ nurseries, is smudging. Now we have already understood that smidrus, such a familiar openwork plastic bush that grew under my grandmother’s windowsill, is the most valuable vegetable of spring. Let others buy aspen in the store, and you can even find a place for aspen bushes in a luxurious yard.
Lettuce, herbs and medicinal plants can be grown not only in an ordinary garden, which you want to hide behind hedges, but also in the most visible place. Just install it raised beds and use a little ingenuity to make these vegetables grow beautifully. One of the beautiful examples is from the botanical garden of Vilnius University in Kairenai:
SCULPTURES AND SMALL ARCHITECTURES WORK WONDERS
Forget about plastic storks, gnomes and streams of colored mulch. Luxury is aesthetic when it is created with quality and fine materials, not with cheap glitter. A sculpture made of wood, stone, steel or other materials, made with love and enthusiasm, is better than an artificially cast hill with stones an
Local handicraft products, typical of that region, are also suitable on the farm: braces, crosses, weathervanes.
A sculpture is also a good solution when an accent is needed, but the conditions are not there to grow an accent plant in that location. Although a luxurious sculpture is placed against the background of boring thuja trees, the whole space is painted in other colors.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING: A WARM EVENING TOUCH
Another important thing is external lighting. Outdoor lighting is a must for luxury. However, even for a simple residential plot that does not claim to have any particular heights, cozy lighting can give that charm that will make you want to stay outside longer, and the view from the window will be more pleasant on long autumn evenings.
