Designers answer what are the 3 best plants for the garden

What are the three most popular garden plants, we asked at the Environmental Design Conference “Garden style” Presenters of 2021. A seemingly easy question got the experts thinking: It’s not easy to draw up lists of favorites, especially when it’s a beloved field and they change frequently. So who chose what? Discover the experts’ favorites and discover why they are chosen.

The best plants for the garden

Gytis Lietvaitis, landscape engineer

Gytis’ list of favorite plants is long, and he grows countless of them in the backyard of his farm. We have talked about the Gytis shipyard in more detail more than once – you can read one of the articles read here. But if we had to choose just three, currently Gytis implants graphs the maximums would be:

  1. Tulips – Gytis associates these flowers with spring and plants them in abundance: bulbous flowers reign in Gytis’ yard not only in flower beds or raised beds, the landscape engineer also hides bulbs in wild meadows and pots.
  2. Dahlias – because there are many colors, a great variety.

  1. Asters are Gytis’ favorites because they bloom even in the cold season, when nothing else offers so many colors.

A selection of Tautvyd’s favorite plants:

  1. Geranium: Suitable for all plants and the petals with brighter veins look exceptional.

  1. Bright hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) ‘Strong Annabelle’ is an impressive hydrangea that stands out due to its size and the texture of its inflorescence.
  2. Rowan is currently at the top of Tautvyda’s list of favorite trees. The specialist is fascinated by the decorative character of this tree: the tree is beautiful both during flowering and in autumn, when the berries ripen. In addition, mountain ash is distinguished by its crown shape and the wood itself.

Tautvydas would have gladly added Medlieva to the list if he could expand the rankings. In his designs he often includes unconventional trees that bloom beautifully and bear fruit or berries. We recently took an in-depth look at the Tautvydas team’s small courtyard design and the plants used in it, including trees. If you are also looking for ideas for a small garden, read it.

Inge laughs that her beloved beak has already been “borrowed” by a colleague. So I had to quickly reclassify the plants:

  1. Alun (Heuchera) — this plant fascinates Inge with its various forms and wide range of colors. Therefore, alums can be applied to various situations.
  2. The Japanese ornamental tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) is a beautiful tree whose leaves turn beautiful colors in autumn.
  3. Fern. Inge’s flower garden is shaded, so ferns suited to cloudy areas are among the specialist’s favorites. To get ideas on what other plants would be suitable for the shaded side, you can here

Oresta Dvarvytytė, indoor plant expert

Oresta chooses indoor plants without hesitation:

  1. Aloe vera (Aloe plicatilis) fascinates Orestes with its elegance. The plant leaves its succulent leaves very symmetrically, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other. Oreste also grows this aloe at his home.
  2. The wonderful philodendron (Philodendron gloriosum) is characterized by veined, heart-shaped leaves. This philodendron is currently very popular all over the world.
  3. Licuala Cordata — Orestes’ dream. Clotsune leaves resemble a real fan.

Oresta shared with us how to choose indoor plants for the comfort of your home and how to arrange them in this article.

Tadas Cvilikas, agronomist

Conferences “Garden style” The founder of “Tado ukios” shared examples of edible plants, which are not only useful, but also extremely decorative. Therefore, it is not surprising that the specialist also chose useful plants for the list of favorite plants:

  1. Rowan: Loved for its delicious berries. Rowan berries are not just garden plants: there are some varieties that grow compactly, so they feel good in pots and can give a plentiful harvest even when grown on the balcony.

  1. The apple tree is a traditional fruit plant, perhaps the most popular. Tad is fascinated by the fact that the fruit keeps for a long time. Plus, kids love them: Tad says apples are first to go in his family, so how can you not love them?
  2. The pear is another agronomist favorite plant.

Laura Popkytė-Fukumoto, landscape architect

A specialist in creating a Japanese garden has identified the following three plants:

  1. The palm maple (Acer palmatum) is a showpiece of the autumn season. Laura is particularly fascinated by the fragility and smallness of the leaves of this plant.

  1. Chimonanthus Praecox – is distinguished by its early yellow flowers, the smell of which resembles the smell of hollywood or osmanthus (Chinese olive).
  2. Japanese plum (Prunus salicina) – the specialist is fascinated by its spring flowering.

All three of these garden plants also decorate traditional Japanese gardens. Laura Popkytė-Fukumoto shared ideas on how to create one yourself at this year’s conference, and we discussed whether a Japanese garden can also look authentic in Lithuania. in this article.

Vaiva Marozienė, greenery designer

Vaiva Marozienė has been a speaker at previous conferences “Garden style”so when we met her in the audience this year, we didn’t miss the opportunity to talk. Vaiva’s favorite plants:

  1. Maple: The landscape designer is particularly fascinated by the decorative character of this tree and the change of colors in the autumn months.
  2. Euonymus alatus: Its leaves shine a special red color every autumn.

  1. Japanese plum (Anemone japonica) is a perennial herb that captivates Vaiva with its surprisingly large flowers in autumn.
