Repotting a houseplant seems sort of to you expiration? You have managed to keep your beautiful plant surviving for months, years and you are starting to feel the doubt creeping in: will it be time to repot it?
Keep hoping not. Taking that poor soul, pulling it out of the earth and moving it home seems like an all too risky thought to you.
Yet you now see her as if she had just gone through Christmas dinner: suffering and longing to be able to wear a bigger vessel.

Take a deep breath and let’s get started. Don’t worry, with a little foresight we too, as in the best films, can add that “no plants were harmed during the production of this item”.
WHEN TO REPOT
Well yes, before understanding how it is necessary to understand when.
Is there a right time? A worse one? Will we understand that the plant needs more space?
Many questions and they are just some of those that, in all good probability, every loving plant owner asks himself.
In general the right answer is simply: yes. Yes, because, in general, there are some simple measures that will help you dispel most doubts and, at the same time, do everything as it should.
One of the great indicators that will tell you when it is time to proceed with repotting is the state of the roots. There is no need to remove the plant from the ground to check them, just look at the water drainage holes, if they leak it is definitely necessary to proceed with repotting.
Otherwise, with a slightly more invasive method, you can remove the pot and check the crowding of the roots at ground level. If you see them very dense then it is time to find a more spacious arrangement for them.
Now we come to temperatures.
It is better to avoid extremes, so too hot and too cold are not suitable. Spring certainly takes the lead as the ideal seasoneven better if you choose a sunny and not too windy day.
LET’S PREPARE FOR ACTION
Very well, we are in March, a few clouds attenuate the warm rays of the sun and a light breeze blows.
Stop there, no happy thoughts towards the sea, we are about to do important work here!
We were saying, the weather is idyllic and we are ready to give our beloved plants a new home. But what do we need?
Here is a useful list:
- A vase a few centimeters larger of the previous one.
You won’t need to move the plant into an excessively large pot, it’s better to proceed step by step. - A good soil it is essential for the favorable growth of the plant. We, for all the needs of houseplants, have designed the Florenpot, special organic soil.
- Crushed stone, expanded clay or draining material in general. For most houseplants it is essential to avoid water stagnation and these substances help eliminate excess water.
WE ARE READY FOR REPOTTING!
Perfect, the time has come. We have the right climate, pots and soil in abundance.
We just have to get close to the plant and do what needs to be done. Strength and courage.
Okay, there’s no need to be melodramatic.
We were saying, once everything is ready, all you have to do is proceed with repotting.
The plant must be removed delicately from the potalso using a knife if the soil has adhered and makes separation difficult. We clean the clod of earth, removing the old soil from the roots and, also with the help of clean scissors, remove the damaged roots, if there are any.
While we are preparing the new home for it, we put some fertilized water in a container and immerse the plant, it will hydrate itself well before the move!
For fertilization we recommend one of these two products:
Now let’s prepare our new vase by placing the crushed stone, or in general, the draining material on the bottom, so as to allow the extra water to drain. The roots of our plant will stay warm and, above all, dry.
To complete the new home we also add the soil and we are ready to prepare the tenant!
All we have to do is put the plant in its new home, add more soil to cover the roots well (but not the collar) and after light pressure make sure that the earth has slipped well into the pot by shaking it slightly.
Finally, let’s water the plant, so that it can immediately start feeling comfortable again!
IF THE PLANT IS WEAK?
This can be a very sore point. For some time you have seen your plant looking a little dull and you have decided to change its soil. However, you are worried that it may not survive repotting.
Indeed, the risk is there.
In these cases, in order not to damage and/or stress the already tested roots, it may be a good option to eliminate the most superficial layer of soil and add new soil together with a suitable fertilizer such as the Granverde liquid fertilizer for green plants, or the universal bio stimulant Granverde Oro, which we told you about before.
It’s true, in this case it’s not a real repotting, but it is a procedure that could allow our plant to return to health and, subsequently, to tolerate a regular change of vase!
What do you think? Nothing too complex right?
Sometimes we put off repotting plants for long periods, partly due to lack of desire, partly for fear of making a mess, but as you have seen there is nothing to worry about. It won’t take long to carry out the entire operation and the risks of you becoming a plant killer are very low.
In case of doubt, you know, we are still ready to help you.
Not to mention that both you and your plants will feel much better!
