Theoretical knowledge can be used in practice in the most interesting ways: This article contains unexpected feedback from a long-time participant of the “Garden Style” conference. Diana Grochovska attends the conference every year. It has become the most anticipated event of the year: both a tradition and a celebration. What has been the most memorable thing at conferences over the years and why do you look forward to them so much every year? Let’s ask Diana. And when you learn how Diana applies her knowledge in practice, you will be surprised.
Garden Style Review: Why Participate Every Year
What do you look forward to most about conferences each year?
Every year it is one of my most anticipated conferences, it has become a unique tradition and a celebration that I cannot miss every year. Throughout the years of the conference, every year I visit, I receive inspiration, new ideas for both my garden and my daily activities. It is an opportunity to meet like-minded people, plant lovers, professionals and friends who are not indifferent to nature and plants.
I remember the first “Garden Style” conference held in Trakai. It was small, but very cozy, and even then it seemed that it was an event that brought together many like-minded people. And this year is already the 10th anniversary event! And you can see that this conference is only growing, receiving more and more interesting visitors and speakers from all over the world. Seeing how it grows, you can be happy that thanks to this event and everything “Yellow wheelbarrow“, Lithuania, its gardens and public spaces have become more beautiful, healthier for people and beneficial for nature.
For me the garden is alive and constantly evolving, every season brings with it a new story and working in it is a pleasure. Inspired by the workshops following the Garden Style conferences, I want to not only cultivate my environment, but also share the knowledge with others.
The most memorable ads of the decade
What messages have remained most memorable to you over the years?
Each conference is different with unique themes and several professional speakers, each sharing their specific expertise. However, I often have to remember the presentations and visualizations of the Latvian Ansis Birznieks, the founder of the company Galantus, the presentation of Noel Kingsbury and the practical seminar after the conference in the VU Botanic Garden in Kairenai, especially the insights of Łola Marijas Bujauskaitė on creating a garden that is long-lasting and not subject to fads (You can see the recording of Ła Marija’s presentation “Garden with a unique atmosphere” here), always useful advice from Vaiva Marozienė and many other talented Lithuanian and foreign speakers.

Reports on care, lighting, pruning and progress of plants are always valuable. Last year we particularly liked the theme of healthy garden design, how to create a wellness garden. The question was how to bring more nature into cities so that everything is created for people. This topic is particularly relevant for me, because attracting nature into the city, into the human living or working environment means a healthier tomorrow, better well-being. Connecting and being in nature reduces stress and strengthens our resilience. A sense of nature can be created by applying many different elements and solutions in each environment.
Garden Style review: how to put it into practice
You are an artist. Tell us about your works, also partly inspired by the Garden Style conference.
I gather knowledge and inspiration from conferences, both for my garden and in my work as a ceramicist, where I convey my connection to nature through porcelain plant installations and works of art. I am experimenting with growing plants in clay and porcelain, using a technology I developed without fertilizers, allowing the plants to grow naturally. Both plants and clay are natural materials that come from nature, and since I have always been interested in alternative ways of growing plants, I was curious to see if ceramic clay and porcelain would grow plants and seeds.
For the first time in Lithuania, I started using this method of growing plants and became very interested in the hydroponic method of growing plants. I use clay and porcelain as soil substitutes, as potting soil for plants. I have developed my own technology for germinating and growing seeds in clay and porcelain, and even though they are getting quite large and starting to flower, I don’t expect to get a harvest because I don’t use fertilizers and let the plants grow as much as possible. Based on the concept of biophilia, I created the installation “Biophilia, or the circle of the thorn”, in which I immortalized my grown plants in porcelain as a symbol of temporality and eternity.
Diana Grochovska also shares her artistic journey on Instagram,”Gemina Moss“, and on the account you can admire the images of the creation of his garden “Garden of the senses“.
Garden style conference in 2025
In 2025, we discovered the roots of the design at the Garden Style conference as early as August 23rd. In Vilnius, at the Litexpo exhibition hall! Here awaited inspiring speakers from the Nordic countries and Lithuania, a fair of plants and garden products, practical advice and ideas that stimulate creativity for beginners and professionals alike. At the conference we also saw Diana’s artwork: plants grown in porcelain and objects created from them.
