Tired of Heather and looking for new ideas? See which fall plant combinations feel new and elegant, even if they use familiar plants. I visited the Oliseto plant market and created 4 combinations with variations to share some autumn inspiration.
Are you thinking of installing a new flower garden or renovating the old one? “Plant composition seminar” – these are online training courses, after which everything will be much clearer: which design laws to follow, which order to plant the plants, how to combine them based on colors and flowering.
Futuristic combination for industrial style
Have you ever seen a gray heather? Truth be told, I’ve walked past them myself without stopping, but if you find them interesting company, they can look like they stepped off the cover of a science fiction magazine.
To create this effect I combined gray heather with decorative cabbage. Many of you know them and they are back in fashion. Decorative cabbage has a very rich, deep color and combines with gray heather in a harmonious cold color.
There are no chamomile-like flowers: this combination is truly futuristic. I would imagine it next to a modern house in anthracite colored pots or simply planted on the terrace.
If you want even more whimsy, you can make the cool colors pop even more by removing the ornamental cabbage and replacing it with silver kale. Such a composition will last even during the winter, because both plants are not afraid of frost and will retain their structure and beauty until spring.
Do these combinations seem too bold and you want something more subtle? You can never go wrong with Heather with Heather. These gray heathers have barely visible pink buds, so pair them with brighter pink flowering heathers and watch as their natural pink is brought out even more.
A solid combination of deep red with berries
You will be surprised by the autumn composition you can create with chrysanthemums! Also: For this combination I chose such an intense red color that it already seems only suitable for graves.
But maybe the time has come to free ourselves from stereotypes? Chrysanthemum doesn’t have to be just a grave plant: combine it with cranberry (Gaultheria procumbens) and you will be surprised by the beauty of the composition. Since both of these plants have a similar color, the common color unites them and gives integrity to the combination.
You can buy cranberries at plant markets now in the fall, and their bright red berries and decorative green leaves last pretty much all winter. Just don’t taste it: cranberries are an ornamental plant.
Also add autumn heather. Greenery without flowers will always do, but even better if the heather sprigs are pink.

Well, if you don’t like the composition only because of chrysanthemums, simply combine heather with cranberries – these plants will always look great next to each other. In “Oliseta” you can also buy such a combination already planted, you no longer have to think.
Vintage romantic combination
Chrysanthemums have returned to the hands of floristic designers and are certainly not only suitable for grave decoration. You just need to choose the right color and friendliness of other plants.
Check out the nostalgically delicate arrangement I created with the light brick-colored chrysanthemum and heather used in the previous arrangement.
The unexpected color of chrysanthemum and pink tips of heather “play” perfectly, so these combinations of pastel autumn plants look modern and elegant.
Combination with monochrome flowers
And now I will reveal the secret of what to do so that your autumn plant combinations always look harmonious. Follow the golden rule: the fewer colors, the better the composition will look. Let one or two colors prevail in the combination, but not five or seven.
It should control more colors, but for this you need to know the laws of design. For this, we have an inexpensive online seminar “Combining Colors in the Garden”, where we look at the principles of creating various color combinations and share tips on plants according to various color palettes.
The easiest way is to use just one color. I’ve picked up a wide variety of plants at the plant market, but they all have the same shade of purple in common. Decorative cabbage, small-flowered and large-flowered pansies of the same shade, asters – when you put them all in one place, such a combination simply cannot look ugly. You can use this law to create your own compositions and you will never go wrong.
I’ve already used the same rule for plant arrangements, but if you’re lacking in fun, you can always use plants of similar color but a little lighter or darker.
For example, add lighter purple chrysanthemums with salad centers to a monochromatic floral arrangement and watch as the combination becomes more interesting.
You can also use two colors, for example, purple together with a bright salad. It is important not to multiply and not to multiply.
Ready-made autumn plant combinations are the solution for busy people
If you don’t have time to experiment, you can always buy a mix of plants where everything is already matched and you won’t go wrong.
This heather combination, for example, is created from heather grown in Lithuania on the Olisevičius farm and you can buy it ready-made in plant sales points in Vilnius, Kaunas, Ukmerge, Klaipėda and Šiauliai, you will find the addresses here (advertising).
Heather is suitable for practically all autumn compositions. Place these heathers next to monochromatic flowers and you’ll see how they immediately give them a counterbalance and make the arrangement more interesting.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and create your own combinations. Remove some plants from the composition and replace them with others – after all, creating plant combinations should be fun, not hard work.
