Which combinations with roses worked best and which plants should not be planted with roses? “Yellow Wheelbarrow” courses. “Plant composition laboratory” teacher, landscape designer Giedrė Adomaitytė he created a romantic oasis in his garden, where he installed several flowerbeds with roses. His garden can be seen on the LRT show “Here is my garden”. And in this article Giedrė shares the combinations and the list of plants from his flower garden (at the bottom of the article).
The combination of rose and mint is risky
In the flower garden of deliciously fragrant French roses of the Gallica group, the designer combines roses with various mint: mint, orange (all varieties are given below in the article). This is Giedrė’s experiment, otherwise he advises against growing mint with roses, because mint tends to spread aggressively. The exception is old roses, which have been established for a long time.
Interestingly, in such a flower bed, mints grow taller than usual because they compete with roses for sunlight.
Giedrė says it’s safer to grow mint next to potted roses or in a limited area so they can’t spread.
Combinations with roses based on the flowering period
Roses are decorative in full season. For the flower garden to be enjoyable all year round, Giedrė emphasizes that it must contain both plants that bloom earlier and plants that bloom later.
In his flower gardens he is satisfied above all with tulips and daffodils.
Giedrė also grows sinavadis with Gallica roses. It is an earlier flowering plant, so while we wait for the rose flowers, it is nice to see the graceful sinawada flowers.
Also, this plant does not produce roses and you can simply cut it back after flowering.

Combinations with roses after flowering
After the first flowering of roses, the flower garden does not sleep. At that time Asian flowers bloom lilies. OR bulls, echinacea AND blood worms they look great for a long time, they retain their structure even in winter.
Combinations of catnip and catnip with roses
Rozanne is a very popular plant suitable for many flower beds. However, Giedrė noticed that this and some other beaks expand very laterally and the roses get stuck. He recommends choosing the most compact ones varietylike Azute Rush, Dreamland, etc.
A similar situation with katžole ‘Walker’s Low’ – flowers violently, roses may need to be saved if maximum distances are not respected. Giedrė instead chooses the more compact variety “Junior Walker”.
You can also have problems with oregano, because they are very prolific.
The golden rule for matching plants to roses
Having learned from her experiments, the designer currently follows the following rule: the stronger and more massive the rose, the stronger the plant next to it can grow. And the smaller the rose bush, the smaller its companions should be, so as not to overshadow it.
Roses and bell plants
It is necessary to pay attention not only to the aggressiveness of the spread, but also to aesthetics. Not all plants may be suitable for the style you want to create.
Giedrė, for example, planted miscanthus and lavender next to the roses. Ultimately, he decided that they overshadowed the beauty of the roses and didn’t fit the romantic style of the garden he was creating.
However, he managed to adapt small bell-shaped plants: mountain plants worked for Giedrei fox.
Roses and boxwoods are the classics of rose gardens
The boxwood balls that have been in Giedrė’s garden for ten years constitute a perfect border for the flower garden. The combination of boxwood and roses is a true classic of romantic rose gardens.
True, the landscape designer had a bitter experience with boxwoods, when they burned in a flower garden where they received more sun. Another potential problem is boxwood pests. Giedrė therefore no longer plants new box trees.
In her rose garden surrounded by boxwoods, the designer combines roses and cornflowers that bloom in May, rust, decorative garlic, catnip, yarrow and sage. Lilies, which are coming back into fashion, look great in the company of roses.
Combinations of white flowers with roses
The designer arranged the central flower garden of floribunda roses around a white birdbath. Other flower combinations also prevail in it. The rose garden border is made up of tufts of mountain sedge and a pair of boxwoods.
The white, elegant and long-flowering plants go very well with roses and Giedrei has done an excellent job.
The catnip ‘Junior Walker’, which is compact and does not lie on top of the roses, also fits well in this white Giedrė flowerbed.
