A year ago, Reda’s land had an empty lawn. However, now near the house there is a wonderful, harmonious flower garden of perennials that receives many shouts of admiration. Learn about the process of creating this flower garden.
In the article we tell you how the idea of changing your plot was born, how a perennial flower garden was created near the house: starting from the choice of the shape of the flower garden and ending with the nuances of planting plants.
Why was the empty lawn abandoned?
Reda says they were initially very happy with the beautiful, well-groomed lawn on their property. No flowers were needed. But ultimately Reda’s family decided they were tired of the same green look and wanted “dresses” for their texture, butterflies, colors and excitement.
The beginning of the installation of the flower garden
First of all, Reda began to look for information on how to create a flower garden so that it would immediately please, be beautiful. She wanted to do all the work herself. There is so much literature and information, but Reda wanted a faster process and lively communication, so she visited the courses organized by “Geltona karučis” “My garden project”where the construction site design was carried out, and “Plant composition laboratory”where he decided on the design of the plants for his flower garden.
After these courses the process of editing the plot began. The soil also had to be changed in the intended places of the flower garden, because during construction the soil was disturbed and the gravel brought in was not suitable for the plants.
Selection of flower shape
There is not much space on the plot, the owners raise dogs, so the shape of the flower garden had to meet several goals:
- the flower garden had to adapt in such a way that there was space for the four-legged friends to run,
- animals must not enter the flower garden or trample on the flowers,
- must be comfortable mowing the lawn,
- manholes must be hidden.
Therefore, the perennial flower garden near the house was placed along the fence, and not somewhere in the middle of the yard, leaving room for the dogs to run in circles and in the center of the lawn. Considering the course “My garden project” after listening to the suggestions, Reda avoided right angles in the flower garden. By the way, he built his terrace according to a similar principle, also without right angles, so that the shapes are repeated on the plot and thus create integrity.
Plant selection
Having determined the shape of the flowerbed, changing the soil in it, we moved on to the most creative process – the selection of plants. For Red, that part was the hardest: how to choose, they’re all so beautiful!
Once again, Reda had its own requirements: to be easy to care for, to be fresh, windy and to bloom all season. We wanted something calm in the living area and bright in the reception area.
- followed the system pairing scheme presented at the seminar;
- I tried to match the colors;
- took into account the flowering time, organized the calendar based on when the plants bloom;
- the plants were chosen so that some plants did not block others;
- he tried to create a rhythm: he didn’t use an inch. I planted two caraganas as a starting point and have already planted other plants from them.
Since Reda wanted a quick effect, he planted slightly larger plants, not the smaller ones. The plants have taken root well. In the first summer there were still spaces between the plants, but in the second year, when we visited Red, the flower garden was already quite dense and revealed all its beauty.
Tested plants
Reda lists the plants she likes most in this flower garden:
- A combination of rasakila and catnip. It’s true that the catnip has grown and is poking out, but you don’t want to tie it up in a broom, so you leave it as it is;
- It seems amazing when the sedges begin to flower in the summer, and that’s when the sedges begin to release their antlers;
- In autumn, the flower garden is decorated with sedges, phlox, autumn asters, kemera and soruole.
It is true that Reda is not sure of the good existence of the wood sorrels in this flower garden, so it is possible that they will have to be moved elsewhere.
Where are the manhole covers hidden?
As in many plots, a very relevant problem is how to hide well covers. Reda says he got the idea from the “Yellow Wheelbarrow” video, which you can watch by clicking here. In it we recommend hiding the well cover in a lush flower garden.
But if you look carefully, you will find: one is blocked by the yuccas that grew here before, the other two are huge well covers – at the very end of the flower garden. In summer these covers are obscured by flowers and in winter by snow.
A perennial flower garden near your home: do you want one too?
Reda advises: “Seek information. I suggest you delve into the basics of creating flower gardens. Color matching, plant arrangement, harmony are very important. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also fun to be satisfied with the result. You’ll save time on gardening courses. You talk to like-minded people and watch an idea start to take shape in your head.”
