What flowering plants in autumn still looks good in late October and beyond? Are there such plants? Indeed it is! In addition there are also very beautiful non-flowering plants that look great especially at the end of autumn.
KOREAN LANDROO
This is one of the plants whose beauty is revealed no earlier than September, and often only in October. In spring this plant blooms quite early, throughout the summer it does not particularly stand out, except for its discreet foliage, and when the autumn mists and frosts begin, all its beauty is revealed. That’s when you understand why this herb is called in both German and English diamond grass – brooms capture fog and lye very well. Also, this year has been very successful for dragonflies, as they love humidity, so they are doing great now
CANE BLUEBERRY
It begins to bloom in the second half of summer and remains beautiful throughout autumn. Race ‘Skyracer’ it is characterized by a particularly tall stature, but other varieties have a similar decorativeness. Cranberries have such a characteristic that their foliage, after receiving a little frost in autumn, painted in yellow, orange shades.
SOROOLA
This is an ornamental grass for the fall garden, we have seen the cultivar ‘Cassiano’. It is important to remember that in Lithuania, especially in the eastern part, soroles do not resist the cold, so you need to choose the variety carefully. It is also necessary to pay attention to the flowering period, because many modern varieties of sorrel bloom very late, so in Lithuania they often do not even have time to show all their beauty. However, in any case, it is really a very decorative plant, so trying to grow it is definitely worth it.
SMOOTH MISKANTAS
If you have space in your flower garden, you can definitely try growing Chinese Miscanthus. In autumn, precisely in October, it is one of the most decorative grasses in the garden. Since there are hundreds of varieties of miscanthus, when choosing, be sure to pay attention to the flowering period of miscanthus. This is important, because in Lithuania not all varieties bloom perfectly, but there are certainly many to choose from. One of the oldest and really very reliable varieties is ‘Maleparto’.
Another very successful, albeit more recent, variety of Chinese miscanthus is this one ‘Federweisser’. It blooms quite early, has white flowers and grows very quickly, so there are no complaints about this variety.
DREBUAN
This is another decorative grass that can be grown in Lithuania. This herb looks beautiful right from the start as soon as it emerges. Drebun has very beautiful, dense and healthy foliage. It begins to bloom somewhere at the end of July – in August, so it seems perforated cloud.
A disadvantage may be the fact that the plant spreads during flowering, especially in summer when it is hot the smell of corianderwhich not everyone likes. However, it is a fantastic plant due to its decorativeness, unpretentiousness and durability.
VIRGIN VERONICA
It’s a fantastic plant, a good variety… ‘Adoration’. It still looks very beautiful in bloom faded silhouette It also looks great in autumn, especially when it has Korean lantanas in the background. Such a silhouette will last most of the winter. So it’s worth taking a look at this plant, because it will look good in the garden both in summer and autumn.
ASTRANZIA
We don’t usually think of Astrantia as an autumn flowering plant, but experience shows that in years when it has enough moisture, it can flower for a very long period. It is one of the few plants that begins flowering in May and blooms almost until November. However, a very important condition is humidity, which obviously has not been lacking this year.
ASTRA
It is a plant without which it is difficult to imagine an autumn garden. There are many varieties of asters, and such a long and relatively warm autumn is very favorable for many of them to show their full potential. One of the recommended varieties of asters is “Asran”. The peculiarity of this aster is that it spreads by shoots, in a carpet, which can be a little more aggressive. However, in some areas where it has the opportunity to expand, it is an extremely good plant. This variety is characterized by its healthiness, it quickly occupies the area allocated to it, so weeds do not really grow in that place. “Asran” it blooms quite late, not earlier than September, but even a leaf is graceful and beautiful.
One of the most reliable cultivars is the rough-leaved aster ‘Violet’. It blooms quite early and blooms with dark purple flowers. Another is the aster ‘Vasterival’. It can be called a useful and excellent plant, but it needs a lot of space.

TROUT
And although it is not a herbaceous plant, it is very desirable to mention it. Usually, when we choose roses or thistles, we focus on the size and color of the flowers, but rarely pay attention to the berries they bear. One of them is red thistle. Its main advantage is the rather bright bluish foliage, which looks extremely decorative in spring and early summer. However, there is a significant advantage of this plug autumn berry show. There are so many berries, and it’s a really nice accent even when the foliage is down.
RECIPE FOR A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN
To have a truly beautiful garden in late autumn it is advisable to dedicate part of the greenery bell-shaped plantsespecially those that show all their beauty in the second half of summer or autumn. These would be miscanti, Korean landroons, soruoles.
