There are many ways you can make a Christmas wreath. I have participated in several workshops on Christmas wreaths, I have had experience with verbenas, bouquets with dried flowers, but I am definitely not a professional in this field. I can, you can too: I invite you to visit Indra (Indra’s ideas), which will show you a very simple way to make a Christmas wreath. Even if it’s your first time, you can’t go wrong:
If we have just a little time and desire, many things can be done with our own hands, and the anticipation of the holidays will only become more pleasant. Is it really possible to make a Christmas wreath in a simple and natural way? Read how Indre suggests making one.
Frame: for the base of the wreath
So let’s get started. First you have to select a frameon which we will place and model all the other goodies. It can be done by:
- Hay;
- polystyrene;
- Tree branches.
You can buy a ready-made frame at flower shops or supermarkets. They are available in different sizes, so you can choose according to your preferences.
For his exemplary wreath, Indre chose a hay frame.

Of course, you can make the frame yourself if you have some hay or if you can cut another branch from your bush in the garden.
And I offer another method that I tried in one of the wreath workshops (best wishes, Jurgita!). There we used large sheets of thin paper – I think newspapers would be better suited to the job. Even if you don’t subscribe to newspapers, use flyers or leaflets. Instead of ending up in waste paper, they will perfectly play the role of a frame for the wreath – just twist it tightly and secure it with tape or wire.
The next step is to embellish the frame
After choosing the frame, wrap it tightly with decorative tape, reinforcing it at intervals with glue. It is necessary so that the crown looks aesthetically pleasing from all sides and no unnecessary gaps are visible when it is lifted from the table. Furthermore, the crown will be more stable and the other parts will simply stick together more easily.
It’s nice if the sash is made of fabric, but you can tie it in a more original way, for example, using linen fabric. It is faster to work with a wider tape, so it would be convenient if the tape was at least 5 cm wide.
The one specific thing that not everyone has at home is hot glue. You can purchase such a special gun with glue refills at a florist supply store. If you like tinkering with crafts, it’s definitely worth having one at home. There are also extremely small glue guns that cost only a few dollars, but they get the job done.
If you’re looking for naturalness and won’t buy glue, you can try making a Christmas wreath without glue. Then use threads, tapes and threads for fastening.
Christmas wreath with natural decorations
Here are some ideas on which natural remedies are perfect for decorating a Christmas wreath:
- Self-harvested forest products: acorns, chestnuts, pine cones. You can choose them now, but they must dry well before gluing them to the frame;
- Dried flowers and fruits, such as woody peonies (see video report). They can also be glued with glue, just remember that they are fragile;
- Dried fruit: walnuts, hazelnuts, etc. – you can simply buy it and you already have the tools.
I’ve shared and photographed more ideas about what berries, fruits, and nature’s bounty you can find right in your own backyard here: “We are making an Advent wreath: where and what tools to look for„.
You can use different tools and intuitively combine them with each other. But this year Indra prefers garlands with one type of decor. And, in fact, this is the simplest way, which will always be delicate and aesthetic.
In this case it is necessary not to reduce the means so as not to run out. For example, a wreath may require about a kilogram of hazelnuts.
Important: if you have small children at home think about the fact that some shiny parts can be scraped off and put directly into the mouth, so be careful of beautiful but poisonous berries or other natural delicacies.
We decorate the wreath with selected delicacies
This step may require a little more patience, but it’s really simple. Here are the steps:
- Apply glue to the selected side of the nut and stick it on the decorative tape, hold for a few moments;
- First cover the frame with a row of nuts (or other gadgets), which will be the main one;
- The dice can be turned as you like, the main thing is that they fit as close as possible to each other and there are no gaps;
- In this way, grow a layer of nuts until the crown becomes full and decorative.
Further decorations are your choice
Once the product has become similar to a real wreath, further actions depend only on creativity and desires. According to Indrė we can choose between the following options, but it is not absolutely necessary to limit ourselves to them:
- We leave the garland without further details; minimalism now really fashionable;
- On the crown we glue the tapemade with the same decorative ribbon (you’ll be sure the ribbon will match);
- It can be decorated Christmas trees with toys, beads. Match the colors with other festive interior details of the house;
- It will also fit perfectly cinnamon sticksand their smell will add coziness to the house.
Additional decorations are also glued with glue.
Advent wreath or Christmas wreath?
Christmas wreath is more decorated, beads, Christmas decorations, shiny details are very suitable. The Advent wreath should be more modest, more natural. However, in this way, both can be produced perfectly.
