How to plant a columnar apple hedge


Columnar apple trees are an excellent solution for a small plot. We have planted a whole hedge of columnar apples – it will be beautiful when they flower and it will be delicious, because we will have several varieties of apples in one row. In addition, a columnar hedge of apple trees will create a border between the lawn and the garden area.

In this video I told you which columnar apple trees appeared in my house: I planted 5 different varieties, in order from first to last. How to prepare a pit – you can read it ten times, but here you can also have a visual look, with all the nuances.

And, of course, the planting of the same columnar hedge of apple trees. The height at which you need to plant is very important. Pay attention to this. If you don’t mulch, you can plant a little deeper, but the end result should be the same: the grafting site is a couple of fingers above the soil.

And this is what we chose to plant. All these columnar apple trees come from Juragiai nursery in Kaunas district. They don’t send it online, we had to take it home ourselves, but it was very neatly packed, the apples themselves are small, so we loaded them neatly into the trunk and a lot of knowledge. Here is our selection of columnar apple varieties (descriptions from their website):

Vasiugan (late summer)
Late summer variety created by the Russian V. Kičina. The fruits are bright red, large, ripen at the end of August. The tree is medium sized, branched, very resistant to cold.

Zane (velyva summer)
A late summer variety was developed at the Dobeles Institute in Latvia. The fruits are medium sized, beautiful, light red in color, they ripen at the end of August, the pulp is white, sweet, aromatic, tasty. The variety begins to set early, is fertile, cold-resistant and quite disease-resistant, the flowers are resistant to spring frosts. The tree is of medium height, branches little, forms a compact and thick trunk, the leaves are beautiful, elongated. The variety is patented.

Baiba (early autumn)
An early autumn variety was developed at the Dobeles Institute in Latvia. The fruits are moderately large, beautiful, the peel is firm, colored with light pink stripes. The pulp is soft, white, juicy, sweet and sour, aromatic. The fruits ripen at the end of August and can be consumed for about 2 months. The tree is of medium development, unbranched, begins to bear fruit very early, very resistant to cold and diseases. Patented.

Ostankino (fall)
Russian autumn variety bred by V.Kičina. The fruits are large, 150 gr. and others still, dark red, juicy, sweet and sour, ripen in September and keep until December. The tree does not grow, compact, resistant to cold and disease.

Moscow necklace (late autumn – soil)
A very promising late autumn-winter Russian variety. The fruits are large, 150-170 g, burgundy, tasty, juicy. The variety is very productive, very resistant to diseases and cold. The tree does not grow, begins to ripen early, ripens every year, ripe fruits remain on the tree for a long time. The variety tends to overload itself with harvesting, therefore, to improve the quality of the fruit, it is advisable to thin out the buds.
