It’s time to move on to the autumn-winter season and use the pots in which summer flowers grew for winter compositions. We have no doubt that waiting for the holidays will be even more fun when your terrace or house is decorated Christmas arrangement in vase. And how to create it, said the landscape architect, professor of “Yellow Wheelbarrow”. Lina Puodžiūtė. Watch the video where you will see the entire planting process:
Christmas composition in vase: detailed video instructions!
The plants used for this composition are: by bus in Paris (lot. Cuprocyparis Leylandii ‘Gold Rider’), virgin (lot. Calluna Vulgaris Skyline), calocephalic (lot. Calocephalus (Leucophyte) Brownii).
The semi-parallel helps extract the composition heightfurthermore, it will be possible to decorate it during the Christmas period. This new species of heather (lat. Calluna Vulgaris Skyline), which has very large bristles, was also selected soft and beautiful. And calocephalus is often used in compositions because it holds its place well structure until spring and gives a silver color that suits both during the Christmas periodboth symbolize our winter.
WORKING PROCESS:
1. Ceramic layer. Small pebbles or clay fragments can also be used. This level works drainage function – prevents water accumulation. Since all three plants in the composition do not like waterlogging, and in autumn there is really a lot of humidity, this drainage layer is very important.
2. Universal substrate. We pour the earth onto the layer of expanded clay. Please note that we have chosen a universal substrate for this composition. But if we were to plant in the ground, we should choose acidic soil for heather, because it is acid-loving plant. However, since this Christmas composition of ours in a pot is short-lived, it will be beautiful and last until spring, so we choose a simple universal substrate. In this case this composition can be watered with more acidic fertilizers, so the heather will be more pampered.
3. Plants. Let’s start with the tallest plant: the cypress. We find a place for him, see from which angle it will look most beautiful and pour a little earth so that the plant will stand. We check that it is planted a little lower than the edge of the pot, so that there is enough space for the top layer. Next, we take the calocephalus. If the roots of the plant are very many and very tangled, we divide them a little and then plant them. This will encourage the plant to take root faster in the new soil. Finally we plant the heather in the pot. We anchor the plants by loosening the soil and them pressing firmlybut don’t forget to leave a little more space at the edge of the vase.
This Christmas composition in a vase turns out to be very dense, and this is no coincidence. Because plants it does not grow during the winterthey do not form new branches and do not develop, so their size will not change during the cold period. So, if you want the composition to turn out abundant, do not forget that it is not necessary to leave spaces between the plants, because they will not fill.
4. Top layer. The expanded clay granules on top look great and at the same time hide areas of empty soil. This prevents crusting that can form during watering. For larger spaces or to add an extra touch, you can use pine cones, dried apples, a sprig of rowan or something similar.

You can keep such a composition at home. Both heather and calocephalus can easily tolerate both land and air. For half cypress it is a little more difficult, but occasionally you can spray the entire composition water fog and keep it inside in these conditions. However, such a Christmas composition in a pot with its greenery, so lacking and desired during the winter, would really decorate every entrance to the house or terrace, because it is basically intended for the outside.
