Your garden may also be swamped with flowers in the fall. I visited the VDU Botanical Garden in Kaunas to get ideas about plants and share them with you. Here are 9 fall-flowering plants that are reliable, undemanding and worth noticing.
“Plant composition laboratory” – this is practical design training in small groups. Here you will learn how to make decorative outdoor plants bloom from spring to autumn and look harmonious. Registration is open, spend time creatively and learn useful design secrets.
Patagonian verbena (lat. Verbena bonariensis)
While I would like to add dahlias to the list of recommended fall flowers, I have to admit that early frosts sometimes cause problems. Therefore, Patagonian verbena is first in the list of autumn flowers.
It is an annual plant that looks beautiful even when it tolerates frost, because it holds its stem like an elegant sculpture all winter.
Patagonian verbena is suitable for growing in large, solid blocks, but looks equally charming among perennial flowers, with bell-shaped plants or as a free counterweight to large dahlias.
Rudbekija (lot. Rudbeckia)
The second plant for the beauty of the autumn flower garden is rudbeckia. Among them, the most popular variety is “Goldsturm”: with rich yellow flowers and black central parts, but it is not necessary to choose it.
In general, most Rudbeckia varieties bloom in bright yellow and give every flowerbed that much-missed glow of sunshine in autumn. A fantastic, hardy and low maintenance plant.
You can buy Rudbeckia from Lithuanian growers here and download it directly to your home.
Sunflower (lat. Helianthus)
Another plant with yellow flowers is the perennial sunflower. I saw them painted in a painting in the MKČiurionis Museum: near an old house there is a large perennial sunflower bush.
But don’t be fooled: Perennial sunflowers can also look very modern if they grow next to flowing gorse or decorate the side of a modern building. Experiment more boldly, especially with the old proven “grandmother’s” plants.
Potentilla fruticosa (lat. Potentilla fruticosa)
In autumn, not only flowers can bloom, but also shrubs. One of these plants is the silverbush, also known as silverbush. This shrub is one of the longest, even until October. The silvery ones bloom in the most different colors: white, yellow, orange, etc. The entire collection of silvery shrubs is grown in the VDU Botanical Garden in Kaunas, so you can come and admire them.
Don’t expect an abundance of flowers in autumn – there will be very few of them, but you will definitely find one.
You can buy thick silver grass Here.
Rosa (Latin rose)
The rose is another shrub that can flower in autumn. When choosing a variety of roses for autumn beauty, you should pay attention to two things:
- The variety blooms repeatedly – only in this case you will be able to enjoy the flowers in autumn;
- Is the variety disease resistant? Some lose their leaves early or get sick, so what’s the picture…
But there are definitely good varieties of roses, you just need to find the right one for you. You can find a large selection of rose seedlings Here.
Japanese plum (lat. Anemone japonica)
One of my favorite plants is the Japanese plum. Most of the time you will come across tall plumes of a stately plant, whose leaves form a beautiful spell and whose flowers grow at eye level. In good conditions, this feather can expand quite well, sometimes much faster than desired.
However, there are lower varieties, which bloom in a wider variety of colors (including bright pink, purple). They usually don’t expand much.
Japanese plum is suited to more humid or partial shade areas, so it would work well with astilbe, bluebells, rogersia, astrantia and other moisture-loving plants.
Japanese plums begin to bloom in late summer and continue to bloom until late fall. After flowering, decorative-looking tubers remain, which add beauty even in winter.
Look for the feathers Here – not Japanese, but also blooms in autumn.
Stars and stars (lat. Aster)
What is autumn without asters and asters? When choosing these plants for your garden, be sure to pay attention to their flowering time. Lithuanian autumn is very diverse, so it is better to choose varieties that bloom as early as possible so that you can enjoy the flowers.
Asters and asters usually bloom in shades of blue, purple and burgundy, but you can also find varieties with more interesting colors or shapes, for example like the aster in this photo with delicate little flowers, which from afar looks like a delicate, soft cloud.
Stars can be purchased Here.
Sedum maximus (lat. Sedum maximus)
Great Shylock (otherwise known as wolf pea, also called not the big one but the flamboyant one) is another great plant for fall. Shiloks require very little care, tolerate a lack of moisture, so they are not afraid of not watering.
Their beauty is revealed from early spring, when they wake up early and begin to develop decorative-looking leaves. Even subsequently it forms dense inflorescences which persist even during the winter.
Shylocks are widely used: they not only look great in a flower garden, not only stand up well to picking bouquets, but are also suitable for decorating graves during Halloween. Because of their versatility, I highly recommend having shillocks in every flower garden.
A selection of Shylock Here.
Kemeras (lat. Eupatorium)
Kemer is an impressive plant that retains its excellent appearance throughout autumn and even winter.
Keep in mind that bombs should be planted in the back plane of the flowerbed. They grow tall, but each year it takes time for the bombs to grow back to their full size. However, if you are patient, you will definitely not regret growing kemera in the fall – that’s when the beauty of this plant is revealed.
In good conditions (sun, fertile soil and humidity), the arches can reach three meters. If conditions are more difficult, the growth that year will be less, but it will still be beautiful. But if they still seem too tall, look for shorter varieties like ‘Baby Joe.’
You can buy belts from Lithuanian growers Here.

Here are 9 fall flowering plants that I recommend growing in your garden. These shrubs and flowers will bloom until late fall, just when you want more color in your garden.
