If you haven’t heard of umami wines yet, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that they are among the most sought after among fine wine connoisseurs today. Umami wines are tasty wines with full flavors and unique character. These wines harmonize tradition with the taste of wine obtained with care after a long process of mastery and passion. A winery’s goal should not be to produce umami-tasting wines, but to create wines so flavorful that they naturally align with particular taste standards.
At Crama Gîrboiu, wine is seen and treated as a living entity that constantly evolves and delights lovers at every moment. Here we find these wines with an umami flavor that you can enjoy until the last drop. And here too we learn to make peace with bold wines and discover another world through premium and exceptional wines.
What is Umami?
If we were to define it in the simplest way possible, we could say that it is the fifth taste that we human beings can identify. More generally, however, this is more than a taste. Discovered for the first time in Japan by the scientist Kikunae Ikeda, the umami taste is today the most appreciated from a gastronomic point of view. While enjoying one of the traditional Japanese “kombu dashi” soups, Ikeda discovered that that flavor did not identify with one of the 4 we all know: sweet, salty, sour or bitter. Therefore the term “umami” was invented and today we translate it as “the essence of delicious things”.
Umami can be found in many types of food. For example: mature cheeses, dried meat preparations, tomatoes, mushrooms, salmon, beef steak are just a few. It’s that taste that gives food flavor and convinces you to keep eating. Furthermore, umami is a point of reference for the quality of consumed products. Interestingly, the fifth taste is also found in drinks, especially green tea and wines.
Umami Wines and Gîrboiu Winery
It’s no secret, Crama Gîrboiu gives priority to the quality, taste and tradition of Vrancea wines. The technology used and the care for the vine lead to the production of tasty wines with a special umami taste. Both connoisseurs and beginners in the secrets of wine will be able to identify umami in wines such as: Constantin Premium Red Blend, Bacanta Fetească Neagră and Tectonic Fume Blanc.
Constantin premium red blend
A representative wine of Crama Gîrboiu, Constantin Premium Red Blend is rich in umami. This red blend is a successful meeting of the Merlot, Fetească Neagra and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, hence the impressive flavor that the wine presents. After decanting, the wine seduces the senses with delicious aromas of red fruits such as raspberry, plum, blackcurrant and cherry.
Constantin Premium Red Blend is a balanced yet intense wine, whose performance leaves a lasting impression. It presents fine notes of vanilla, cinnamon and tobacco, typical of bottle refinement. It is a special and premium wine that we reserve for moments of celebration or personal fulfillment. It presents well in the bottle, in the glass and to the taste, it fulfills the most surprising desires.
Black women’s Bacchante
We can say a lot about Bacanta’s Fetească Neagră, but today we focus on the umami aftertaste it possesses.
At the first taste the wine welcomes us with the well-known aromas of plums and oriental spices. We let ourselves be seduced by the pronounced tannins that enhance the cinnamon and anise in the taste orchestra. Ultimately the taste persists and translates into pure flavor. This Feteasca Neagră was aged in French oak barrels to obtain an opulence of aromas. The taste of umami is perfected in the glass by tasting it with a suitable dish or simply alone.
White tectonic smoke
Although we find umami more often in red wines, in Crama Gîrboiu the white wine also stands out in a unique way. Tectonic Fume Blanc offers vigor and naturalness and this places it unmistakably in the category of savory wines.
This blend is made up of the Sauvignon Blanc Barrique, Fetească Albă and Riesling de Rhin varieties. Together they demonstrate how versatile white wine is. The umami character of the wine comes from the mix of exotic flavors with which Crama Gîrboiu always surprises us. To these we add white peach, hints of vanilla and butter for a delicious freshness. Acidity, harmony and balance are found in Tectonic White Smoke. Just add fun, good food and originality for a complete umami experience.
