Spring flowers in pots: plant for a quick effect

Potted spring flowers can beautify your garden now—you don’t have to wait until the frost is gone. I suggest you create a fresh vase arrangement of spring flowers together. It will be beautiful until June, maybe not for very long, but beautiful now:

Spring flowers in pots will make it easier to wait for the hot summer – read what I chose for my composition, what accessories I put in the substrate and how I planted flowers step by step.

SPRING FLOWERS IN POT: WHAT TO PREPARE

For the composition you will need:

  • Planting spring flowers – I chose cream colors butterflies (3 pcs.), discreet but fun the sun (1 pc.) and classic spring flowers – pale purple orphans (3 pieces);

  • A large pot with holes in the bottom to let excess water drain away;
  • Drainage layer: expanded clay granules, shards of terracotta pots, stones, etc. are suitable;
  • A mixture of peat substrate and compost – you can buy it separately and mix it, or buy a ready-made mixture;
  • Agroperlito go vermikulito pellets (optional).

The agroperlite will help provide oxygen to the roots of the plants, and the vermiculite will hold the water and prevent it from evaporating so quickly, so we can water the plants a little less often. In detail about agroperlite and vermiculite: what is the difference and how to use it, you can read here;

  • Fertilizers – you can use organic fertilizers (I chose granular manure) or complex minerals;
  • Waterfall for irrigation.

PLANTING PROCESS

  1. Add selected drainage to the bottom of the pot;
  2. Add a mixture of peat and compost substrate, agroperlite, vermiculite and selected fertilizers;
  3. Mix well;
  4. If you used fertilizer, add a mixture of peat substrate and compost on top so that the fertilizer does not come into contact with the roots of the plants and burn them;
  5. Water the resulting substrate with water, especially if it is very dry. If it’s a little wetter, you can do this step after planting the flowers;
  6. “Test” the composition: arrange the flower pots in the prepared large vase. You will thus be able to discover the most beautiful composition, you will know exactly where to plant which flower;

I did it like this: I put the tallest ranunculus at the back of the vase, I put the sunflower in the center of the vase, but slightly to the side so that the composition was not symmetrical. For the same reason I planted two pansies together in front and one further back from the sun.

  • Once you’re happy with the look, you can plant;
  • Water generously with water;
  • Cover the remaining empty areas with expanded clay granules (if you have any). They are quite light, so they will not harm the plants in any way. Instead, it will act like a mulch: it will prevent moisture from evaporating from the pot too quickly, so you can water the flowers less often.

TIPS FOR THE PLANT

  • After removing the plants from the plastic pots, inspect the roots. If they are in a circle, don’t be afraid to spread them out a bit;
  • Plant so that there is good clearance towards the top of the pot, because we will be pouring the top layer of drainage anyway and you don’t want everything to overflow over the top when you water the plants;
  • Don’t be afraid to plant thickly if you want it to look beautiful right away. Such a composition will be short-lived, but it will make you happy here and now;
  • If you are planting summer flowers and expect them to bloom all summer without repotting, leave more space between the seedlings.

Here’s the composition and it’s done! Decorate courtyards, terraces, entrances and anywhere you can think of. I invite you to make something similar. Or maybe you already have spring flowers blooming in pots? Share how you decorate your space for spring.
