At the end of 2021 we prepare for the winter holidays with great enthusiasm and, hopefully, Romanian wines.
The month of December always begins with optimism, joy and beloved Christmas carols. We arrange the houses, decorate the tree and wait for the Christmas carols together with family and friends. Every end of the year welcomes us with emotion, the Christmas holidays are a time to relax with our loved ones. We exchange gifts and gather in large numbers around the table laden with dishes we all know: steaks, sarmales, homemade sausages, fish, cozonac and other delicious desserts and Romanian wines.
In addition to food plates, we also find wine glasses, essential for Romanian occasions or holidays. The Gîrboiu winery assures us that, as important as the food is, the drink we serve at these types of events is equally important. For Romanians, Christmas lunch begins with an aperitif. We mean, of course, the delicious sparkling wines. Do you continue with the wine or even the newest beer, can you finish with a glass of sweet dessert wine or maybe a digestif? However, wine remains the most important. In fact, if chosen with care and attention, wine can become the highlight of the Christmas lunch.
What are the wines we can enjoy on the Christmas table?
If we choose to serve only wine, the choice of wine must be strategic.
At the aperitif we can serve our guests white or rosé sparkling wine or light white wines. In this list we include the much loved Rose Quartz or White Quartz. Among the white wines we mention Livia Plavaie or a blend of Sharbă and Plăvaie from the Epicentrum range for truly Romanian tastes. The freshness of these varieties lends itself to snacks at the beginning of a meal and causes discussion.
For main menuwe generally make a pairing between the wines and the food we prepare. A well-chosen wine will enhance the qualities of a certain dish cooked with love and vice versa. For example, to the Sarmales choose a black girl like the one from the tectonic chain. This Romanian variety has a remarkable character with its aroma of plums, black cherries and blackberries. The intense ruby color promises a tasty taste, worthy of a Romanian meal. In other words, Feteasca Neagră could be the perfect wine to pair during Christmas.
THE roast pork we pair full-bodied red wines such as Bacanta Merlot Barrique or Epicentrum Merlot&Cabernet Sauvignon. And a chicken disheswe choose fruity wines, especially dry white wines such as Şarba from the Bacanta range. Constantin Premium Red Blend is the wine that adds further elegance to any chosen dish. The bold red blend, fine leather and tobacco notes and refreshing acidity perfectly enhance red meat dishes.
Regardless of the varieties you choose, what matters in the end is that the flavors of the food and wine complement each other.
For fish or seafoodwe tend towards dry white wines with above-average acidity or light sparkling wines. Dry wines have the role of “cutting” the natural fat present in fish or seafood dishes. This creates a desirable balance of flavors and guests have a dining experience to match.
Among the recommendations of the Gîrboiu winery is Bacanta Chardonnay, a dry and elegant white wine with aromas of apple, pear and fine notes of vanilla, orange peel and candied figs. Tectonic Fumé Blanc is also a good choice. This refreshing wine is a complex blend composed of Sauvignon Blanc Barrique, Fetească Albă and Riesling de Rhin. Enjoyed alongside a festive menu, these wines will pleasantly impress anyone.
What wines do we serve for dessert?
Each meal ends with a desert and usually the right wine is a rosé or a sweet or semi-sweet wine. We can also serve sparkling wines as dessert, reflecting the festive nature of the event.
For Romanians, Christmas desserts are cozonac, cake, walnut cakes, various cakes and even gingerbread. Probably the most suitable wine we suggest for dessert is Bacanta Tâmiaoasa Românească Special Edition – an exceptional semi-sweet wine, in a limited edition of only 3000 bottles. The wine has a rich exotic fruit aroma and pairs well with cakes or scones!
In the sparkling wine category, Crama Gîrboiu’s Quartz range offers an effervescent rosé that shakes glasses and impresses the taste buds! The sparkling wine has a special romantic color and a delicious raspberry aroma.
During Christmas, the Gîrboiu Winery honors our traditions every time and prepares special wine offers. Offers include carefully thought-out packages with Romanian wines at festive prices to enrich meals. You have the opportunity to taste different types of wine and delight your guests at the table with the most awarded wines from the Gîrboiu Winery.
