Traditionally it is published on the eve of the new year Pantone 2022 color of the year. For the 23rd time, the “Pantone Color Institute” chooses the color of next year, taking into account global issues: this time it is truly unique and I will soon tell you why. “Pantone Symbolism 2022″.
For the first time in Pantone’s history, an entirely new color has been created for the Color of the Year selection. To your attention, the dynamic PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri.
According to representatives of the institute, the creation of a new color for the year 2022 has become a symbol of the changes taking place in the world now. Living in times of intense change, we often reconsider our attitudes and standards. “Very Peri” is like a signpost that gives us hope and encourages imagination and bold creativity.
The flag of hope was also carried by last year’s two-tone tandem: the gray ‘Ultimate Grey’ and the bright yellow ‘Illuminating’ (ideas for plants with these colors shared here ).
The creation of this year’s “Very Peri” color was mainly influenced by the desire to overcome the current pandemic situation. Symbolizing faithfulness and constancy, blue with a hint of vibrant red created a dynamic shade of Very Peri purple.

Purple ‘Very Peri’ plants for the south side of the yard
I asked landscape architect Lina Puodžiūtė Ragauskienė how to liven up the sunny side of the courtyard with colorful “Very Peri” plants. He really didn’t spare any ideas:
- Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’ is a tall plant that flowers in July and September. The upright candle-like flowers remain decorative even through winter.
- Common honey (Perovskia atriplicifolia) ‘Little Spire’ is an undemanding and tolerant plant: it is not afraid of heat or drought. Furthermore, it is also resistant to diseases. A true florist’s dream. It does well in flower gardens as a background plant, blooms in July-September. Characterized by… fragrant leaves!
- Phasena catnip (Nepeta faassenii) ‘Walker’s Low’ is one of the most popular catnip varieties. It blooms for a long time: it starts in June and delights with its flowers even in September. A variety of insects and butterflies are very popular.
- True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) ‘Hidcote Blue’ is a feature of classic flower gardens. The plant is very resistant to drought: it is no coincidence that it comes from the south. It flowers in June-August.
- Goji essay (Salvia nemorosa) ‘Caradonna’ is another favorite plant for butterflies and bees. Thanks to its upright inflorescence, goji sage looks great in a naturalistic flower garden, but it can also be grown as a low hedge along a driveway. It flowers in June-September. ‘Caradonna’ stands out from other sages by its dark stems.
- Goji essay (Salvia nemorosa) ‘Marcus’ is a dwarf variety of sage, perfect for the foreground of a flower garden or for bordering paths. It blooms all summer (from June to the end of August).
- Snap (Geranium) ‘Rozanne’ is an award-winning plant. And it is not for nothing that it delights with its beautiful flowers from the beginning of summer until the first frosts. As it grows, it expands horizontally and forms a carpet. Disease resistant.
- Alpine aster (Aster alpinus) ‘Dunkle Schöne’ – grows in dwarf clumps, but can also spread like a carpet, making it perfect for rock gardens. It doesn’t require much maintenance. This is an early variety: it blooms in May-June.
- Bush Stars (Aster dumosus) ‘Lady in Blue’ – a late aster flowering in September-October. Extremely undemanding and frost resistant plant. It can be used not only in the flower garden, but also to form low hedges.
The 2022 Pantone Plant Color of the Year for Sunny Side
If your flower garden doesn’t get much sun, don’t worry, we have purple ideas for the shady side of the garden too. If you are looking for extremely short plants Lina recommends choosing:
- Creeping fruit tree (Ajuga reptans) — carpet plant suitable for partial shade. It flowers in May-June. It stands out not only for its erect inflorescences, but also for its dark decorative leave
- Vinca minor (Vinca minor) is an evergreen plant. Extending horizontally, it is an excellent plant for covering shaded areas. It blooms in May-June with small decorative windmill-like flowers.
- Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’ is a plant suitable for partially shaded areas. It is short, wider at the sides. It blooms in May-July, with star-shaped flowers.
